Catholic Charities of Gallup immigration
specialist.
Sister Janet Cashman, a Sister of Charity of
Leavenworth, KS, began Oct. 1 as an immigration specialist for
Catholic Charities of the
Diocese of Gallup
. Sister Janet has two years
missionary experience in
Haiti
where she was a consultant to a hospital helping analyze
nutrition programs. She also designed a new one.
Sister Janet spent
22 years in
Peru
where she
was director of Health Care Ministry for the Archdiocese of
Piura-Tumbes. She managed a clinic for the uninsured and was
executive secretary of Catholic Charities Piura-Tumbes. Sister
Janet is fluent in Spanish and has knowledge of written and
spoken French and Haitian Creole. She has translated medical
documents for clinics and has provided simultaneous translation
at meetings for her community.
During the past
year Sister Janet interned with Network and
Center
of
Concern
in
Washington
,
DC
on immigration issues. She
attended the national conference of the Justice for Immigrants
Campaign of the USCCB that was held spring 2007.
Sister Janet has a background in Public Health from
Tulane
University
. She had a
major in International Health and a minor in Health Education;
holds a Certificate in Political and Social Theory from UN
Antonio Ruiz De Montoya, Lima; and a Certificate in Health Care
Ministry from UN de Santa Fe de Bogota, Columbia.
Sister Janet was
chairperson of the Sisters of Charity Leavenworth community’s
social justice executive committee and a team member of the
Kansas State Migrant Health Care Program.
Sister Janet will
work closely
with
Central New Mexico Catholic Charities
Immigration Office,
Albuquerque
and Catholic Charities Immigration Office in
Las Cruces
.
